Got Figs?

Figs have been around since biblical times and come in different varieties. Most of us know the fig as in Fig Newton bar cookies and also the various fig spreads that are available at our grocery stores. Last year, I was blessed by my dear neighbor to enjoy a fresh fig from his tree. What a treat it was to me and the kids. :)

The other day, he came over and said he had a problem. Being a good neighbor, I wanted to help him out and he told me that his problem was he had too many figs. Well, well, well…how could I not help my neighbor in distress.

The kids and I grabbed our baskets and headed up the dirt road to his house. Here are a few of the figs that we picked, in total we picked well over 60.

Last year we made a yummy fig cookie as found here:

Ingredients:
1 c chopped figs (about 1/2 lb)
1/3 c water
1 c butter
1/2 c sugar
1/2 c brown sugar,firmly packed
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 c sifted flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:
Cook figs with water, stirring frequently, until thickened (about 5 minutes). Set aside to cool.

Beat butter with sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Blend well. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix into the creamed mixture. Stir in the cooled figs. Drop by teaspoons onto lightly greased cookie sheets.

Bake 375 degrees 10 to 12 minutes, until lightly browned. Remove cookies and cool on wire racks.

Makes about 4 dozen.

This recipe gives a chewy cookie with yummy fig flavor that I have to ration to my kids or else they would devour all in one sitting. ;-)

Plum and fig jam sounds yummy!! I need to find a source for plums. The cookies are super easy and disappear very quickly.

  2. I have so been enjoying figs I am thinking of planting a tree in our backyard!
I hope to try your cookies :) They sound yummy.

Yes, go plant that tree! :) The same neighbor gave me a part of his tree and it has rooted nicely and I am hoping that it will produce some figs next year.

  3. We bought a Hardy Chicago fig this year and were surprised to get 4 figs already! I’m not sure how to tell if they are ripe. I thought I picked them ripe, but they didn’t taste like much. Maybe overwatered? I just don’t know. There is another ‘crop’ coming, but I’m not sure if they will get there before it turns cold.

Congrats on the figs!! They will come off the tree very easily when ripe. Unlike many other fruits, they don’t continue to ripen once picked. :(

  4. Kiva,
Feel free to mail some figgy cookies south! :O)
